How to get there

Height Gate is a non-staffed property, working on simple lines - camping barn style.
It relies on its users and a few volunteers to keep it clean and running smoothly.

We thank visitors for leaving Height Gate as they would wish to find it.

Renewable energy
In 2006 we obtained substantial grants to install renewable energy systems and make the building more comfortable in winter – solar panels, biomass wood pellet stoves, additional roof insulation and new pointing. There is also a moving wall display showing how the solar panels work and the changing temperatures being achieved throughout the day, and information leaflets for groups to use – a good opportunity for environmental education!

Hot water
There are 3 sources of heat to the hot water tank:

  • Solar panels on the barn roof. A wall display indicates the temperature of the water in the tank.
  • A back boiler on one of the room stoves when this is running
  • An immersion heater  - used on days that aren’t sunny enough to get the water hot but not cold enough to warrant lighting the stove

Space heating
There are two biomass wood pellet stoves serving the activity barn and `meeting room’; the latter’s back boiler not only heats the hot water but also supplies radiators in the bedrooms and toilet area. There is also a coal/wood stove in the kitchen. There is a separate drying room with heater and extract fan. Outside is a campfire circle.

Cold water
The cold water supply comes up from a deep bore hole, and its quality is tested every year. Should this ever fail, spring water is available from an outside tap - this was the old supply to the house, before the borehole was sunk, and we would recommend that this is boiled before drinking.

Toilets
There is no mains sewerage – the toilets use very little water and drain into an Aquatron self-treatment tank.

Cooking
The well-equipped kitchen has a large commercial 6-burner cooker and oven running off calor gas, and a safety cut-out gas interlock ventilation system to European regulations to prevent any risk from carbon monoxide.

Telephone
There is none on site.  Mobiles are all usable at Height Gate.  It is a booking condition that visitors have a mobile phone switched on during their stay and that we are advised of the number.

Dogs
Sheep and other animals often graze the pasture near the building.  For this reason we regret that NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED AT HEIGHT GATE.

Camping
We have fenced off a section of field next to Height Gate for camping and/or outdoor games. Please remember to keep the gates shut to prevent sheep/cow droppings!

What to bring
We suggest bringing the following:

  • Torches
  • Sleeping bags
  • Sleeping mats (there are no bunks except for the small single room downstairs adapted for people with disabilities – otherwise, the sleeping rooms are carpeted and visitors sleep on the floor)
  • Very warm clothes as well as lightweight gear (an upland site!)
  • Waterproofs and stout/waterproof footwear
  • Indoor shoes  -   we ask you to remove boots at the door
  • High factor sun protection  -   our atmosphere is very clear
  • Washing up liquid, oven gloves and LOTS of tea towels
  • Loo rolls
  • Provisions
  • Maps (one is available at the centre)
  • Mobile phone(s)
  • Matches
  • Bin liners for taking away your rubbish (there is a household waste recycling site on the main road in the valley, just a quarter of a mile in the Todmorden direction)
  • Tents etc. if you plan to camp.

Shops
There is a Co-op supermaket and a range of other shops (plus cash machines) in Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.

Walks
Possible in all directions.  We have three walk cards for you to use, kept in the bookshelf;  you will also find a walking guide here.  Please keep to rights of way in the vicinity of Height Gate.  However, you are free to wander where you will on Langfield Common (open moorland which starts about 300 yards from Height Gate).  Open moorland walking can be hazardous in poor weather conditions.
